Packing Tips for Your Self Storage Unit

Packing a self storage unit doesn't have to be complicated. With some planning, you can make the most of your space and keep your items safe and accessible. Here are some practical tips to help you get organized:

Tackle the Big Stuff First

Start by placing larger, heavier items on your storage unit's floor, then stack lighter boxes on top. This keeps everything stable and saves space.

Organize by Room

Group items from each room together. It'll make things much easier to find when you need them later—especially if you're storing things long-term.

Put Valuables Out of Reach

Store your valuable or infrequently used items toward the back of the unit for added security while keeping items you'll need closer to the door more often.

Keep Essentials Accessible

If you need something soon, make sure to put it near the front of your self storage unit. There's no need to dig around when you need your holiday decorations or sports gear!

Create a Little Path

Leave an aisle down the center in larger units. This will make accessing your things a breeze without moving everything around.

Disassemble Furniture

Remove the legs from tables or other furniture and store them flat against the wall. This will make your self storage unit much more space-efficient.

Stack Chairs and Mattresses

Stack dining chairs and lay mattresses flat. It'll help avoid damage and save space in your unit.

Protect What Matters

To keep dust and pests at bay, use plastic covers for your mattresses and upholstered furniture.

Everything You Need to Know About Storing Your Stuff

Flexible Lease Terms for Your Self Storage Unit

Renting a self storage unit is easy and flexible. Most of our units are rented on a month-to-month basis, but if you're planning to store for a while, we offer discounts for longer commitments:

6-Month Lease

Get a half-month discount

12-Month Lease

Enjoy 1 month free

To take advantage of these deals, pay the full amount for your lease term upfront.

Do You Need Insurance for Your Items?

We offer protection plans for items stored in our self storage units, if needed. We do recommend checking with your homeowner's or renter's insurance provider to see if your stored belongings are covered. Always ask about exclusions to ensure you're fully covered.

How to Keep Your Self Storage Unit Secure

Your self storage unit's security starts with the right lock. We highly recommend using a disc lock, which is available for purchase at our office. These locks are tough, with a hardened steel shackle and a 5-pin tumbler for extra protection.

And don't forget—keeping an extra key in a safe place is a good idea, just in case. If you lose your key, we can help cut your lock for a small fee.

What Shouldn't Be Stored in Your Self Storage Unit

While self storage units are great for most of your belongings, there are a few things we recommend keeping out of storage. To protect your things—and to avoid attracting pests—please don't store:

Perishables

Perishable food or pet food, as these can attract rodents and insects.

Dirty Appliances

Dirty appliances which could lead to unpleasant smells or pests.

Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials like paint, batteries, tires, chemicals, and anything flammable or explosive. These are not only dangerous, but they can also be harmful to other items in the unit.

For extra peace of mind, we recommend packing your items in new boxes (instead of used grocery store boxes) and using plastic bins with lids for added protection. Keep in mind that extreme temperature changes in self storage units can affect certain items, so be cautious with anything sensitive to heat or cold.

What You Can and Can't Do in a Self Storage Unit

It's essential to use your self storage unit correctly. Here's what you need to know:

No Residential Use

Idaho Statutes 55-2303 prohibits using a storage unit for living purposes.

Business Activities

We do not allow you to use your self storage unit for business operations (unless it's for storing items related to your business that you're working off-site).

No Garage Sales or Events

You are also not permitted to host garage sales or events within your self storage unit.

By following these simple rules, you'll help us keep the facility safe, secure, and efficient for everyone.
